In short, Purchase Protection Plan is an insurance coverage offered by MasterCard to its credit cardholders, underwritten by Chartis Malaysia Insurance Berhad (795492-W) [formerly known as AIG General Insurance (Malaysia) Berhad] (CMI).

This policy insures against loss of your Personal Property or Items purchased with your MasterCard credit card in the event of Theft, Burglary, Robbery and Accidental Damage within 30 days from the date of items purchased.

The Purchase Protection Plan provide a worldwide coverage. However, the reimbursement will be paid in Malaysian Ringgit (RM).

The Annual Aggregate Limit(RM) for Classic, Gold, Titanium, Premium and Platinum Mastercard Credit Cardholders is Maximum of RM 7,500 per annum.

This complimentary insurance plan is designed to cater MasterCard credit cardholders (Classic, Gold, Titanium, Premium, Platinum and WorldCard) principal cardholder, are eligible for Purchase Protection Plan coverage after completing the activation process.

The policy coverage is limited to one coverage per individual regardless of the number of MasterCard credit cards the person holds.

How do I activate Purchase Protection Plan coverage?


You may choose either of these two (2) channels to activate your coverage:

i)  Telephone – Call 1 300 80 2988
(Operating hours: 9am – 5pm on Monday to Friday, excluding weekends and public holidays)

ii) SMS – Follow the 3 easy steps as per below:

a) Write Message as shown below:

(MC <space> 12-digit NRIC <space> NAME per NRIC)
e.g.: MC 123456789101 Alan Tan

b) Send to 36660 (standard SMS charges apply.)

c) Receive a FREE SMS reply from 36660 as below:

From: 36660
RM0.00 Dear xxxxxxxx9101, your free MasterCard Purchase Protection Plan, underwritten by Chartis will be effective from DDMMYY.

Your protection is valid for one year and the coverage begin effectively upon successful SMS activation.

Upon activation, you will not receive any Certificate of Insurance for this policy.

However, you will receive a SMS from Chartis Malaysia Insurance Berhad confirming your policy coverage.

** The Purchase Protection Plan do not applies to MasterCard debit cards.

How do I make a claim?

On discovery / occurrence of the loss or damage, you must make a police report within 24 hours and notify Chartis Malaysia Insurance Berhad (CMI) as soon as possible.

This must been done no later than 30 days after such loss by completing a Claim Form and submitting it to CMI together with the following:-
a)     Police Report (for Insured Personal Property / Items)
b)     Original sales receipt / invoice or photocopy of charge form / billing statement
c)     Photograph of damaged Insured Personal Property / Items
d)     The damaged Insured Personal Property / Items, when requested, to be provided at Insured Cardholder’s expense.

How long does it take for a claim to be processed?

Claims are processed within 14 working days upon full submission of all required documents to CMI. To avoid delay, all claims must be submitted directly to CMI.

How do I check the claim’s progress?

You may contact CMI’s toll free customer service hotline at 1 800 8888 11 (Operating hours: 9am – 5pm on Monday to Friday, excluding weekends and public holidays) to check on the progress.

When should I notify CMI after the loss or damage happened?

You must notify CMI within 30 days from the date of loss or damage.

Now I have more reason to keep my MasterCard credit card.

I have cancel all my credit card except to keep one MasterCard credit card. 😀

Purchase Protection Plan For Mastercard Credit Cardholders

KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 (Bernama) — MasterCard Worldwide is collaborating with Chartis Malaysia Insurance Bhd to offer MasterCard credit cardholders a 12-month complimentary purchase protection plan with coverage up to RM1,500 each time for one year.

This is also the first collaboration by MasterCard with an insurance company in Malaysia with global affiliations, MasterCard said in a statement on Friday.

“This collaboration with Chartis Malaysia is a testament to the commitment by MasterCard to offer cardholders added benefits beyond the point of purchase,” said Jim Cheah, vice president-cum-senior country manager of Malaysia and Brunei, MasterCard Worldwide.

Cheah said through the plan, cardholders could enjoy peace of mind and minimise inconvenience caused by theft or accidental damage for items purchased anywhere in the world.

The plan offers a 12-month instant protection to cardholders who make purchases using MasterCard credit card during the one-year period.

The purchase protection plan is valid from the policy’s effective date and only offered to MasterCard credit cards issued in Malaysia.

It is currently limited to individuals and only covers cardholders who have activated the coverage.

  1. When I called to register, Chartis Malaysia Insurance Berhad tried to Upsell me Purchase Protection Plan plus at RM120 per annum!
