MPH Bookstore Fact Sheet
MPH Bookstores has its roots in 1815 when William Milne, a young missionary, established a permanent mission press in Malacca. This establishment moved to Singapore in 1890 with the primary objective of printing literature.
In 1906, the organization underwent another name change to the Methodist Publishing House. In 1927, it was incorporated as Malaya Publishing House when it became a public listed company. Following the announcement of the Malaysian nation in 1963, the company changed its name to Malaysia Publishing House and new bookstores were opened in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca. To the public, Malaysia Publishing House has always been known as MPH.
The late Jack Chia, acquired MPH in 1972. MPH then became known as Jack Chia-MPH Ltd. The company changed its name to MPH Ltd in March 2000 to reflect the change in its majority ownership since 1998. MPH Bookstores Sdn Bhd was 100% owned by MPH Group (S) Pte Ltd which in turn was a subsidiary of MPH Ltd, a public company listed on the stock exchange of Singapore.
On 20 December 2002, MPH Bookstores (S) Pte Ltd was bought over by a Malaysian company, Jalinan Inspirasi Sdn Bhd, which is part of a large Malaysian conglomerate controlled by Malaysian businessman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary. Jalinan Inspirasi changed its name to MPH Group Malaysia Sdn Bhd to reflect its core businesses and it now owns MPH Bookstores (Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia), MPH Distributors (Malaysia and Singapore) and MPH Library Services (Singapore).
MPH Bookstores’ location in Singapore are primarily situated at Raffles City Shopping Mall, CityLink Mall and Robinson Road which caters to the office crowd and the surrounding vicinity. Its outlet at Novena Square also boasts a major clientele around its area.

AS the nation’s official language, Bahasa Malaysia has always played a significant role in uniting a country with different ethnic groups.
It is this togetherness brought through the common use of this language that has enabled us to grow and develop into the country that we are today.
Being one of the more established bookstores in Malaysia, MPH felt compelled to help return Bahasa Malaysia to its glory days with the setting up of Mutiara Minda in October this year, a section within MPH Bookstores dedicated to Bahasa Malaysia literature.
This section is an ideal platform to highlight the works of talented local authors while promoting the use of the national language.
For a good cause: Representatives from the various charities at the presentation ceremony.
The move to set up this section could not have come at a better time as there is a growing pool of highly talented local authors, with an increasing number of works being published in Bahasa Malaysia.
This trend may be indicative of the rising number of readers in our nation, a positive sign that should be further encouraged by the book industry players, as exemplified by Mutiara Minda.
MPH decided to embark on the Membaca Sambil Beramal campaign during Ramadan. The campaign saw MPH introduce the Mutiara Minda card that offered card holders a 10% discount on all books bought from the Mutiara Minda section and up to 25% discount for selected bestsellers.
The cards were sold for RM10 each, with all proceeds going to charity.
By the end of the campaign, MPH had managed to accumulate RM40,500 and the proceeds were handed over to selected welfare homes.
“The success of this campaign was made possible with the continuous support of MPH customers, business partners, local distributors and employees.
“I would like to thank them for making it possible for us to garner the amount that we did, and to be able to hand out RM4,500 to each home,” MPH Mutiara Minda project manager Zaffri Hassan said.
Due to the encouraging response, MPH is looking at making this an annual project.
Other plans to further promote Bahasa Malaysia literature were also unveiled in the form of the Mutiara Minda Magazine by the 10th Malaysian National Laureate, Datuk Dr Anwar Rethwan.
Perhaps the first of its kind published by a local bookstore in Malaysia, this magazine is the quintessential guide for all good reads in the national language.
It will be published every quarter and complements the English version — Quill Magazine — in serving the reading community.
