Maybankard issuance expected to hit three million
KUALA LUMPUR: Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) expects its Maybankard Visa debit card issuance to hit three million by June next year.
Consumer banking head Lim Hong Tat said the card had now surpassed two million mark in just two years since its launch in 2008.
“To celebrate this achievement, we are introducing two new services for cardholders. One is acceptance for online transactions and the other is the expansion of online payments that will include travel, hotel and retail purchases,” he said yesterday.
Lim said this at an event to celebrate the issuance of two million Maybankard Visa debit card.
He said cardholders wanting to use their Visa debit card for online transactions were required to register with Maybankard Secure On-line Shopping via Maybank2u.com.
He said Maybank’s monthly debit card billings now stood at about RM250mil, with over 850,000 transactions, and the bank aimed to increase this figure to RM300mil.
“Presently, online billings and transactions by debit cards make up only 0.3% of the bank’s total credit and debit card online billings.
“We expect online billings to increase significantly with the support of the new e-commerce initiative and ongoing campaigns.”
He said Maybankard Visa debit card had about 82% market share of billing volume for debit cards in Malaysia.

Maybank to reach frequent flyer customers via new premium card
KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank aims to reach 10,000 of its customers who are frequent flyers this year through its new Maybankard World Mastercard.
It is also part of the bank’s commitment to cater to the diverse needs of its consumer segment.
Its deputy president, head of community financial services Lim Hong Tat said the card opens a new realm of possibilities in travel benefits for high-end customers.
“Through this premium card, Maybank can better fulfil the distinctive lifestyle needs of a select group of customers, in this instance, the affluent frequent traveller.
“The new card has a year-round exclusive programme with Malaysia Airlines. Cardholders who purchase a one-way MAS business class ticket, will enjoy a 50% discount on the return flight using Enrich Miles,” he said at the card launching ceremony yesterday.
Elaborating further, Lim said that the Group intends to maintain the card’s exclusivity by keeping the number issued conservative.
“As this is a super-premium MasterCard, we wish to maintain its exclusivity by offering membership through invitation as well as meet among others, the stringent qualifying criteria,” he said.
Lim expressed confidence that with the increasing affluence of Malaysians and the business traveller market, there will be a niche segment of high premium credit cards, that demand the best of travel experience and privileges.
“The Maybankard World MasterCard is well positioned to offer this,” he added.
