Shoplifters getting bolder
A woman in baggy attire went into a supermarket, slipped a carton of beer weighing 12kg under her clothes and walked out unnoticed.
In fact, she walked in and out of the 24-hour store several times within 15 minutes. Her total loot? Five cartons of beer and a packet of beverage.
Her escapade on Sept 27 was only discovered two days later when a security team at the supermarket in Serdang saw the act on a CCTV recording.
The recording showed the woman and a boy browsing inside the store. They had walked in earlier with two men, who later began a casual conversation with the cashier.
While they were chatting, the woman put a carton of beer under her loose clothing and walked out of the store, only to return moments later.
This was repeated four times before the entire group left the store.
Security manager S. Selvakumar, who viewed the recording after receiving complaints of missing items, said this was not the first time as the group had shoplifted in several branches of the supermarket.
“They hit another store last year. At one time, I happened to be there when she came. I approached the woman, saying I had seen her somewhere but she avoided me and fled the shop,” he said at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department yesterday.
Selvakumar has lodged a report at the Bandar Kinrara police station, stating that the losses amounted to RM860.90.
“Each carton of beer weighed about 12kg. I believe she had a pouch under her clothes, which helped to keep the carton from slipping off as she carried it out,” he said.
Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong advised shopowners to be on the alert for such groups.
“They are not professional thieves as they ignored the CCTV,” he said.
